NathanvilleBaglin Street, Smythesdale, Victoria, Australia

Hello Tom,
Thank your for your query.

I am sorry but I can provide no insight as to why Baglin Street does not appear on the maps listed by you. But it is definitely a street in Smythesdale. It appears to be approximate to where the Baglin Family lived for a number of years. I am not sure when they arrived in Smythesdale and this would require some research. But I am aware that Hubert Lawrence (Roy) Baglin and his wife had a property in that area where they had a dairy farm and also grew flowers for the commercial market. Mrs Baglin apparently imported Tulips directly from Holland for her own use and also on sold bulbs to the> Botanical Gardens in Melbourne and Ballarat (Both major cities).

You mention that you were aware of a John Thomas Baglin. Is he the Tasmanian gentleman. If so he was the great grandfather of Roy Baglin. Roy's father Hubert William died in Smythesdale in 1947 but I think he was living with his son.

Hope this has been of a help to your research

Regards
Margaret

Reference a John Thomas Baglin from Tasmania!

A William Baglin can't be found in either the 1841 Census for Uley or the 1851 Census for Gloucestershire. It may be that he was one of the convicts transported to Van Dieman's Land, now known as Tasmania on the HMS Norfolk which arrived at Port Arthur in 1835. The name on the ships manifest is "William Biglin aka Baglin" convicted of stealing and sentenced to seven years. If he was transported, it would explain his absence on the census records. This information is courtesy of someone who has researched the Cooper family history where his ancestor was on the same ship.

However, if this is the same Baglin then either the DOB of his daughter Elizabeth is wrong e.g. perhaps it should be 1836 not 1838 or else Mary had her daughter by someone else after William had gone?

Referring to John Thomas Baglin, he came from London and met his spouse in Tasmania; she was from Carlow, Ireland. Might prove interesting regards search of the English Baglins to see how John Thomas Baglin fits in and work back from there.

A message from Tom Baglin with reference to the origin of Baglin Street, Smythedale, Victoria, Australia.

I admire what you have done here. I like the part where you say you are doing this to give back but I would assume by all the comments that this is working for you as well.
